Michigan Football: 3 Reasons Wolverines will beat Hawkeyes
By Josh LaFond
In a tight game, the Wolverine special teams reign supreme
When Jake Moody missed a field goal last week and missed it so badly — hooking it 15yds left — I had to rewind it to make sure my eyes weren’t lying.
But like the stud that he is, he rebounded and came through clutch several more times that game.
The same is true for punter Brad Robbins who consistently pinned Maryland back last week. Robbins currently rankings second nationally in net punting. A stat that you and I likely didn’t know about or care about prior to this week.
But here’s the thing. Why do we care about kickers and punters?
Because they’re going to be needed this week. We talked about it in our keys to winning article for this game, but when Michigan football has an opportunity for points, they need to take them. Having one of the country’s best kickers has gotta make you feel good about that. And when you’re playing one of the Big Ten’s worst offenses, don’t be afraid to punt it. Again, it helps to have one of the nation’s best back there too.
This game will be tight early. Even the Big Ten Championship last year was 14-3 Michigan at halftime before they pulled away winning 42-3.
So when you are in a tight game, and again, they will be, it’s comforting to know that the special teams aren’t something fans, players, and coaches need to worry about.
They won’t be the ones costing Michigan this game. And because of that, the special team advantage for the Wolverines is yet another reason why we have the maize and blue winning this game.
