3 overreactions from Michigan football’s win over Maryland
By Nick Popio
These are three of the most absurd overreactions from Michigan football’s seven-point win over Maryland at the Big house on Saturday.
Michigan football pulled away from a pesky Maryland group that gave them all they could handle in its closest scrum to date. Blake Corum went off with another video game-type performance for the second straight week.
Coach Harbaugh and his staff made the correct adjustments to turn the tide in their favor and overtake the Terps to start the Big Ten opener on the right side.
Here are the three overreactions.
1. Michigan football should have routed Maryland by more
A lot has been said about Michigan’s soft slate and for good reason. They finally matched up with someone who could give them a tighter outcome than the first three wins and Maryland did wake them up and gave them a reality check. That makes this an overreaction because Maryland is better than expected and has a legitimate shot at upending Michigan State at home next Saturday.
The Wolverines did have a 15-point cushion when the game had been decided, but because Maryland drove the length of the field and scored late on Michigan’s prevent defense, the final tally was only a difference of seven. Michigan’s defense had its chance to win by more, but Maryland’s offense didn’t want to quit until the clock struck zero.
The Terps’ offense is legit and it may carry them to four wins in the next four tries. Taulia Tagovailoa is an NFL-caliber quarterback and will be one of the best that Michigan football faces all year. Time will tell if all of these things come true. Let’s not forget that Michigan opened the 2021 Big Ten docket with a similar, yet too-close-for-comfort win over Rutgers too.
