Secondary was exceptional

The Wolverines might have surrendered 269 yards through the air but the secondary really saved the day for Michigan football on Saturday.

Any secondary is going to struggle if the pass rush isn’t getting home and that was sort of the case in the first half. Still, DJ Turner made a game-changing play and came up with a huge interception on a Maryland drive that had advanced into Michigan territory.

The Wolverines were looking at a six or 10-point deficit if Maryland was able to cash in with points, but Turner made a spectacular play. He also had another pass breakup in the game.

As good as Turner was, he wasn’t the only impact player. Mike Sainristil was all over the place and notched his second sack of the season in addition to two tackles for loss.

Gemon Green was stellar in coverage and RJ Moten came up with another game-changing interception with around five minutes left. Corum cashed it in for six a few plays later and suddenly, the lead went from eight to 15.

You have to tip your cap to Steve Clinkscale because the work he’s done with Green and Turner (both guys who played on that 2020 defense) has been amazing. Both look like NFL corners now and so does Sainristil, to be honest.

That was a genius move by Jim Harbaugh and it’s helped make this secondary the strength of the 2022 Michigan football defense.
