Defense: A-

Like I said before, it’s kind of hard to grade a game where a team only plays its starters for around a half. It felt like a preseason game and I don’t mean that as an insult to Hawaii.

The Rainbow Warriors will get better. The disaster of last season just put them in a tough spot against a really, really good Michigan team.

If Michigan’s defense had played the entire game, it likely would have pitched a shutout. Still, there are a couple of things I could nitpick about.

One is the lack of turnovers. It’s hard to say anything bad about a pass defense that allowed just 3.1 yards per attempt and a QBR of 13.3, but I would have liked to see at least one takeaway from the defense and there were chances in the secondary.

I really wanted to see Will Johnson come down with that first interception but it’s only a matter of time. DJ Turner, Germon Green, Johnson, and Mike Sainristil were outstanding in coverage though and outside of one long run, Hawaii got 86 yards on 31 carries (2.7 average).

There was also just one sack according to the box score and again, I would have liked to see more. The pressure wasn’t an issue though.
