J.J. McCarthy is all set up to take over as QB of the future
I hate to be one of those guys to say “I told you so” but I have to do it. I gave various reasons throughout the off-season why J.J. McCarthy should be the starting QB for Michigan football, and I was actively shunned and shamed for it.
After the performance that each QB had on Saturday against Colorado State, everybody now knows who should be the starting QB from here on out.
In Jim Harbaugh’s offense, the ongoing battles for various positions on the football field is called a meritocracy, and people just seemed to assume that because Cade McNamara was named a captain, his spot as a starting QB was set in stone.
While being named a captain that doesn’t start games is highly unusual, and definitely outside of the norm, it is not completely unheard of either, as being named captain is more about leadership and respect from teammates than the on-field product itself.
With all of this being said, I do feel bad for Cade McNamara. He was blindsided by Harbaugh’s decision to start both QBs, as Cade didn’t find out Harbaugh’s decision until he himself read about it on Twitter and/or Instagram, just like the rest of the media and fans.
This decision very well could’ve rattled Cade’s confidence (which was one of the questions I had in the last article I wrote about Michigan football before the game against CSU) and possibly at least had a hand in his struggles in the CSU game.
I understand Cade said he had the best camp of his career during the off-season and he felt like he deserved to start, but being a good practice player is one thing, and actually performing on Saturdays is another.
Performing when it counts always takes the cake, and JJ McCarthy just always seems to do that every time he enters the game.
McCarthy’s time is now
I didn’t see any riskiness that was so heavily talked about as one of his “flaws” during the CSU game. Every time McCarthy led a drive, it ended in six points. That’s what this offense needs at this point.
I can go on and on and on again, but we’ve exhausted this for the last time. JJ just needs to play average on Saturday and he will probably be Michigan football’s starting QB for the foreseeable future.
I just don’t know how you go back to Cade after everything that happened in the CSU game.
Cade McNamara beat OSU and gave Michigan football a Big Ten title. Fans will forever be grateful for that, but the passing of the torch is officially in the cards. Out with the old, in with the new.
All aboard the JJ train! Go Blue!
