The Bad: Passing Game

Michigan’s offense and the passing game were very underwhelming. They didn’t do anything fancy or show off the offense as much as we had hoped. While this was to be expected because it is against a weak opponent during week 1, I wish there would have been more. Out of total passing attempts, Michigan was 18 for 28, between three different quarterbacks.

We didn’t see deep throws despite our talented wide receivers, and much of the offense revolved around Blake Corum and Donovan Edwards. However, we did see Roman Wilson go for 61 yards, weaving around the Rams’ D-Line and secondary to go for a touchdown.

There were too many drops from our receivers and tight ends that should have been caught and Michigan was 3-10 on third downs.

That needs to improve if they want any chance of competing for a title. Third downs, especially third and longs, are perfect opportunities to show off the passing game.

The offense could have been worse, but it could have been much better. With the talent they have, they need to show it off. We saw what they are capable of last season. These first few games are vital to utilize their passing game and see what they are capable of. They should use these games as a sense of “practice” for the in-conference and elite opponents later on in the season.
