Michigan Football: Ranking the Jim Harbaugh era quarterbacks
By Brady Back
2. Shea Patterson (2018-2019)
Shea Patterson continued the tradition of quarterbacks who transferred to Michigan during the Harbaugh era. Patterson had two impressive seasons at Ole Miss before taking his talents north. Patterson showed toughness and resiliency, starting all 26 games he appeared in for the Wolverines.
In his two seasons, Patterson’s numbers dwarfed his predecessors. The Ole Miss transfer finished with 45 touchdowns, 15 interceptions, and 5,661 yards. While not a true dual-threat, Patterson showed a willingness to scramble and frequently rushed for first downs outside of the pocket.
1. Cade McNamara (2020-Now)
It should be obvious why McNamara ranks at the top spot. Cade McNamara just capped off Michigan football’s best season in decades beating Ohio State, winning the Big Ten Championship, and earning Michigan a spot in the playoff.
McNamara burst onto the scene in 2020 after leading Michigan to a triple-overtime victory against Rutgers. Since that moment, it’s been the McNamara show. Cade has started 15 of the 18 games he has appeared in. During that time, McNamara has 20 touchdowns, six interceptions, and 3,001 passing yards.
Despite his success, McNamara must still win the quarterback battle against J.J. McCarthy, who could end up surpassing McNamara on this list.
