Michigan Football: A 2023 commitment gets a bump, another deserves one
Michigan football commitment Deakon Tonielli received a rankings bump this week and it’s clear that another commitment, Semaj Morgan is due for one.
It’s fair to say that earlier this summer, fans were freaking out about Michigan football recruiting, and to be fair, there were some legitimate reasons why.
The recruitments of CJ Carr and Dante Moore played a big part in that. But once fans accepted that and Michigan started to build some momentum and put the NIL talk behind it, the 2023 class actually looks pretty solid.
Michigan football has picked up a bunch of commitments since July and one of those was three-star tight end Deakon Tonielli. Tonielli was ranked in the top 500 overall but now, he’s received a fourth star according to 247 sports composite rankings. The 6-foot-6, 215-pound tight end is ranked No. 391 overall and 20th among tight ends.
For those paying close attention, that’s the seventh four-star for Michigan in the 247 sports composite rankings out of 14 which means half of their commitments are blue chips.
It’s not that ratio you want as the defending Big Ten champion or a playoff participant, but there are a number of candidates to move up, just as Tonielli did and one of those is Semaj Morgan.
Semaj Morgan is due for a fourth star
Morgan is 5-foot-10, 175 pounds and is ranked 483 overall in the 2023 class according to the 247 sports composite rankings. However, he’s more than a short wide receiver. He really can do it all and in a recent game for West Bloomfield, Anthony Broome of The Wolverine described him as the best player on the field.
“Morgan was by far the best player on the field on Thursday night, finishing with 9 catches for 168 yards and a touchdown while also adding an 81-yard kick return.”
Morgan is often overlooked when it comes to Michigan football’s 2023 class but he shouldn’t be. He’s always been productive and he’s going to be a playmaker.
I’ve never been worried about him. Sometimes it’s clear that rankings need to be updated and that’s the case with Morgan, who at the very least, should be rated as a composite four-star recruit in the 2023 class. He’s currently a three-star prospect ranked 483 overall and 10th in the state of Michigan.
Yet, I believe he will get a fourth star by the time his senior season is over. He’s too good to be ranked where he is right now.
