Michigan football opened fall camp earlier this week and while we haven’t seen or heard much, we look at some early takeaways for the Wolverines.

It’s a wonderful time of year. Michigan football is back on the practice field and the start of the 2022 season is now literally less than a month away.

The Wolverines opened fall camp on Wednesday and they’ve been taking part in practice throughout the week. Of course, Jim Harbaugh and Michigan football don’t offer much access to practice — that’s just the way it is — but there are still some rumblings that trickle out.

It also doesn’t hurt that the team will post a few videos here and there to wet the appetite of fans and give us a small glimpse at what’s going on.

Sunday should give more information as assistant coaches will be meeting with the media, at least Matt Weiss and Sherrone Moore (wonder if QB will come up?).

But here’s a look at what we’ve learned so far in Michigan football’s fall camp.

J.J. McCarthy seems just fine

If you haven’t seen McCarthy’s dime to Roman Wilson, here it is. Do yourself a favor and watch it.

Yes, it’s just one play and we have no idea how the rest of camp is going, but the message boards sure seem to feel good about McCarthy. There have even been rumblings that he’s played like Jonny Manziel.

McCarthy does play like that sometimes, but last season, he was a little careless. At times, he will try to make a big play, when the easy play would have been more successful.

That’s all part of learning to be a quarterback. Cade McNamara went through the learning process and McCarthy is now. But once he starts to mature as a quarterback (you can always see it), he’s going to be nearly impossible to keep off the field.

McNamara will start the season opener against Colorado State, but McCarthy will make it difficult to keep him on the bench. I truly have no idea what’s going to happen and I don’t think anyone does. But the Wolverines have two talented quarterbacks and that’s not a bad thing.
