Michigan Football expands the offensive line board in 2023
Michigan football has lots of work to do on the offensive line in the 2023 recruiting class and some new offers went out recently as the board expanded.
One position you wouldn’t think Michigan football would struggle to recruit in the 2023 class is the offensive line, especially after the 2021 season.
The Wolverines were dominant on the ground behind the best offensive line in the country (according to the Joe Moore award). However, Michigan football hasn’t really been able to take advantage of that on the recruiting trail.
There are a number of reasons for that. Sherrone Moore, the offensive line coach, was promoted to offensive coordinator and that’s probably impacted his ability to focus on recruiting.
Moore was one of Michigan football’s top recruiters before that and he’ll get back to recruiting at a high level — he did land four-star, Amir Herring, by the way — but it’s clear that the Wolverines needed to reset their offensive line board after missing on a number of top targets in June and July.
Breaking down some new O-line targets for Michigan football
One of the recent offers by Moore and the Wolverines was to three-star offensive tackle Nick Fattig, who recently committed to Texas Tech.
He’s listed at 6-foot-4, 275 pounds according to the 247 sports composite rankings and he’s ranked No. 798 overall. He’s out of League City, Texas, and committed to Texas Tech not long after getting an offer from the Red Raiders back in May.
Tech was his first Power-5 offer and it seems like Michigan football could make some headway, especially if the Wolverines are able to get him on campus for an official visit.
Fattig also had interest from Ivy League schools so Michigan’s academics should be appealing but again, the fact that he’s from Texas and committed to an in-state school could be the biggest obstacle.
Another interesting offer that went out on the offensive line on Thursday was to three-star Nathan Efobi out of Georgia. He’s not committed anywhere and is ranked as the No. 403 prospect according to the 247 sports composite rankings.
Efobi hasn’t taken any official visits yet, so this recruitment really is wide open and despite his ranking as a three-star recruit in the composite rankings, he’s ranked inside the top 100 overall according to On3’s own rankings.
Efobi is listed at 6-foot-4, 282 pounds, and is listed by both 247 and On3 as an interior offensive lineman, but with just one commitment in the class, that’s not surprising.
Michigan football needs to add at least 1-2 bodies at tackle and another commitment at guard wouldn’t be a bad thing either especially after taking just two offensive tackles last season.
Miami, Penn State, and Georgia Tech are a few others to watch and the Yellow Jackets are the slight leader according to the On3 prediction machine right now, but Michigan football’s offer appeared to make an impact and the Wolverines should push here, just as they should with Fattig.
