Michigan Football: Ranking assistant coaches as recruiters
By Kyler Kregel
#6.) Linebackers coach George Helow
Helow has been a fairly good recruiter with some better-than-expected results in each cycle. He’s pulled in a four-star linebacker in recent classes, landing Jimmy Rolder over some Big Ten opponents last cycle, pulling in Semaj Bridgeman this cycle, and even scoring a big-time commitment from Mason Curtis in 2024 out of Tennessee.
Additionally, though, he’s also pulled some intriguing lower-ranked recruits who could surprise, such as three-stars Micah Pollard and Deuce Spurlock last season.
Helow did play a big role in landing an initial commitment from top-100 prospect Raylen Wilson, but ultimately, the defending national champions, Georgia, came calling, and Helow and Michigan could not stop them. Helow’s gotten some solid results for the Wolverines, and certainly is pulling his weight on the recruiting trail.
#7.) Running Backs coach Mike Hart
Hart has been somewhat oddly maligned by the Wolverines online fanbase, despite somewhat decent results at the position. Hart landed three-star back C.J. Stokes last year, and was a very early contributor to this recruiting class, landing two top targets quite early in four-star all-purpose back Cole Cabana (Michigan’s second-highest ranked commitment), and three-star power back Benjamin Hall.
While the results aren’t overly flashy, Hart identified his targets early and secured commitments from them, something that always brings some degree of confidence, regardless of the recruiting ranking assigned to each prospect from recruiting sites. Overall, there are some solid adds here, and Hart also added some quality backs during his time at Indiana previously.
