Cornerback

Michigan football fans should feel good about the level of competition on the roster this year and another position that will be interesting to watch in fall camp is cornerback.

DJ Turner is probably the only guaranteed starter after last season and he’s a guy that looks like he can play in the NFL. He’s probably the most underrated player on the team and I fully expect him to have a breakout season in the sense that he’ll contend to be first-team All-Big Ten.

Who starts opposite Turner is going to be the subject of intense competition. Five-star freshman Will Johnson is one candidate. He’s going to play this season and it shouldn’t surprise anyone if the 6-foot-3 corner starts the opener against Colorado State.

It’s not going to be easy though. Gemon Green and German Green should both be in the mix for playing time, as well as Mike Sainristil who stood out in the spring game as a nickel back.

Ja’Den McBurrows has been dealing with some injuries but the sophomore-to-be is another name that will surely be in the mix. Just like at wide receiver, edge, and offensive line, multiple guys are going to get significant snaps, even if they don’t start.

The same goes for quarterback too. It will be interesting to see how the meritocracy plays out but the good news is that Michigan football has as much depth as its ever had under Jim Harbaugh.
