No stars, no problem?
Some college football teams are using NIL to their advantage. Michigan isn’t one of them. At least not right now. Things are going to change on that front but until they do, the Wolverines are at a bit of a disadvantage because it’s being used as pay-for-play when it’s not.
Stuff like the national guard NIL deal is going to help. That made and will make for some cool promotional stuff and things that other recruits will want to be part of.
But the Wolverines have to find other ways to gain an edge and right now, it’s clear they are doing it through their evaluations, or at least intend to.
Manuel Beigel committed on Saturday, one day after French EDGE Aymeric Koumba. Both players are from Brandon Collier’s program and it sounds like the Wolverines could add others in that program too.
Collier said if Koumba was from America, he would be a four-star recruit. Mike Elston seems to agree and he must like Beigel a lot too to take him this early.
The fact is that there are only so many 6-foot-8 guys who can bend and rush the passer (Acheampong) and Michigan is getting guys with the raw ability before others even know about them.
So am I worried about the rankings or lack thereof? I’m not that worried. It just means that Michigan needs to be right about these evaluations, at least right more than they’re wrong.
