Michigan football added its ninth verbal commitment in the 2023 recruiting class and its third four-star prospect in Amir Herring.

Amir Herring was one of the first 2023 recruits projected to Michigan football and after a back-and-forth recruitment, the four-star, in-state offensive lineman, committed to the Wolverines on Thursday, giving U-M its second four-star addition in less than a week.

Ranked No. 283 overall in the 247 sports composite rankings, Herring is a key addition for the Wolverines out of West Bloomfield, especially since he’s ranked as the No. 4 recruit in the state of Michigan for the 2023 class.

The Wolverines, who have his former head coach Ron Bellamy on staff, were long seen as the favorite for Herring, however, they sealed the deal during his official visit last month.

Nebraska made a strong push for Herring and was the projected leader for a short period of time before Michigan football made its own push for Herring and that wound up being all it took to get his commitment.

What Amir Herring’s commitment means for Michigan

It’s good news on multiple fronts. For one, it’s the first offensive line commitment of the 2023 class and while Herring isn’t a tackle, the 6-foot-3, 300-pounder is ranked as the 13th-best interior lineman in the country.

Herring actually plays tackle in high school and is set to become a four-year starter this fall but he doesn’t really have the length to play tackle and seems like a better fit at guard.

The Wolverines should be set at guard in the near future but by the time that Herring makes the transition and is comfortable, he should be competing for a starting job. Plus, in terms of pass protection, former tackles tend to make pretty good pass blockers on the interior.

Beyond what Herring brings to the football field, he also gives some much-needed momentum to the Wolverines’ 2023 class.

The hope is that Michigan football will add at least one other pledge on Friday but at the very least, the Wolverines are finally stringing together commitments.

They have three commitments within a week and all three were ranked in the top 500 of the 247 sports composite rankings, with two of them being four-star prospects.

Next. 6 potential commitments in July. dark

In all, that’s four top-500 commitments since June and that number should continue to grow.
