No, Michigan State won’t finish with a better class than Michigan

Mel Tucker and the Spartans are doing well on the trail, but Michigan football is still going to wind up with a better recruiting class.

Our Chris Peterson just wrote an article last week about why we need to slow down with the “Mel Tucker is a better recruiter than Jim Harbaugh” talk.

I want to build even more off of that argument for Michigan’s fans sake, because they are rather notorious for overreacting and panicking when it isn’t necessary.

Obviously, if you read the article that Chris posted, he mentioned that Michigan State hasn’t received even one top-100 recruit yet under Mel Tucker. That’s an insane statistic to me. Insane in a sad way.

By the way, I don’t know if any of you have noticed, but every time a new coach is hired to a respected program, and that coach brings some progressive ideas or a fresh perspective to recruiting, it results in a 2-3 year stretch of buzz and recruits wanting to see what that coach is all about.

This happened with Jim Harbaugh as, when he was hired, Michigan football soon followed up with a top-5 class for 2016, with #1 overall recruit Rashan Gary as the prized possession, and many high-level guys were lining up to commit to Michigan football.

Although Michigan State hasn’t received a commit from a five-star (tough) in many years, the point is, all of this momentum is to be expected from a new coach.

The reason why there shouldn’t be any concern

This doesn’t include that Michigan football and Michigan State have different recruiting philosophies. You can’t go out there and say just because Michigan State gets all these recruits already that their strategy is better than Michigan’s.

That is nonsense.

Also, MSU happens to have one of the richest alumni in the world in Matt Ishbia, who I’m sure has had a ton of influence for that program, and has provided a lot of their things, when a program like Michigan wouldn’t condone a lot of those things.

There are just different approaches to recruiting. One is more outgoing, free-spirited, aggressive, and just generally cheesy (MSU), while the other is more patient, tactical, and selective (Michigan).

Michigan football’s approach has almost always been slower than some other programs. Jim Harbaugh did almost leave. I’m sure that had to do something with it as well. It is okay though.

Like Chris said, until they get some five-stars or even top-100 guys, stop worrying. They were bound to get better at recruiting eventually. No program stays stuck in the mud forever (unless you are a football program like Kansas or something).

They have a good class right now, but it is barely top-10, they might lose a commit soon to Arkansas, and guess what? The college football season hasn’t even started yet.

With a good season, Michigan football will be right back to where they were, and I expect that to happen. The biggest thing is patience.

Let them laugh, joke, make fun of us. We’ll see who’s laughing the hardest after the season is over and/or National Signing Day is upon us.

Is the continuous missing out on recruits concerning at least a little? Yes. Do we all wish we could wave a magic wand and get any recruit we want? Yes.

Recruiting isn’t always linear though.

If there’s one thing I’ve learned over Harbaugh’s rollercoaster tenure, it’s that good things don’t always come right away. Good things come to those who wait.

All of you all should get that by now. Do I need to remind you? Come on now.
