Michigan Football: With 5-star buzz, QB recruiting is just fine
Don’t get stressed about Michigan football’s quarterback recruiting because even as CJ Carr trends to Notre Dame, the Wolverines are just fine, and here’s why.
Michigan football fans need to get prepared because the Notre Dame trolls are going to be out in full force this week once CJ Carr makes his commitment to the Irish official.
At this point, every expert is making the projection, so it’s essentially a done deal. There is still the negative fallout, which is mostly perception, and that’s maybe the worst thing for Michigan.
The reality of where Michigan football stands with quarterback recruits is much different and that’s why I’m telling Wolverine fans not to worry, things are just fine.
In fact, they are better than fine.
Five-star 2024 QB Jadyn Davis visited Michigan football this weekend and by all reports, the Wolverines blew him away. That led Adam Friedman of Rivals, who has an 88 percent hit rate on his predictions, to put in a Futurecast pick for Davis to land at Michigan.
A couple of Michigan reporters for the Rivals site Maize and Blew review followed and Davis now has three projections for the Wolverines. Nothing has happened on 247 sports or the On3 prediciton machine, but Steve Wiltfong of 247 sports even reported that Michigan made a move.
Why Michigan football has no need to panic
It’s also telling that while Carr was visiting South Bend, Jim Harbaugh and his staff were in Ann Arbor meeting with Davis and making a big impression on his parents. Furthermore, it points out something that’s fairly obvious: Michigan doesn’t view CJ Carr like it does Dante Moore.
I pointed this out more in-depth yesterday, but Michigan has only focused on Dante Moore in 2023 and Arch Manning was the only other QB offer. In 2024, the Wolverines have hosted three other quarterbacks besides Carr and it seems likely that CJ isn’t their highest-rated QB.
Now, if you don’t have a shot at the other guys, it would make sense to take CJ. Yet, it seems like CJ doesn’t want to be at the same school as Moore and since Notre Dame, reportedly, won’t recruit Dante anymore, the Irish decided to prioritize Carr over Moore.
That’s their choice but Michigan football was smart not to do that. Now, the Wolverines have a better shot of getting Dante Moore and if they don’t, Davis is a real option in 2024, as well as Julian Sayin and Michael Van Buren.
But all Michigan football has to really do is land one or the other. If it lands back-to-back five-star QBs, it feels like the room will get crowded, although it’s not a bad thing if you can manage it.
Yet as long as the Wolverines get Moore or Davis, then Carr to Notre Dame will be nothing to worry about. You have to worry about Michigan making the right decision I suppose, but it wasn’t like the Wolverines made CJ Carr a huge priority and whiffed.
He was never the priority he probably wanted to be for Michigan and Notre Dame took advantage. It is what it is but what Michigan football fans don’t need to do is panic about QB recruiting.
The Wolverines are just fine.
