Michigan basketball was going to host Gavin Griffiths for an official visit in June but that now seems like it won’t happen. Here’s the latest.

Gavin Griffiths is one of the fastest rising recruits in the 2023 class and Michigan basketball seemed to be trending up in his recruitment earlier this month.

Griffiths was a key target of the coaching staff during the live evaluation period and Michigan basketball made enough headway that it got an official visit set for June 14.

However, Griffiths also scheduled official visits to Rutgers and Virginia Tech. In the first part of May, he visited Rutgers and that seems to have changed the dynamic as the Scarlet Knights are now expected to get his commitment as early as this week according to Jaime Shaw of On3.com.

Shaw is the top college basketball recruiting analyst for On3.com and on Saturday, he put in an expert prediction for him to land with the Scarlet Knights with a confidence of 100 percent.

What it means for the Wolverines

It’s disappointing for Michigan basketball fans because it seemed like the Wolverines were trending up in his recruitment. He’s a 6-foot-7 wing who can really shoot the ball which is also one of the top priorities for Michigan to add in this cycle.

The Wolverines were expected to host Griffiths and Papa Kante the same weekend in June. The two players are close and there was talk about them even teaming up.

Now, at least, that won’t happen at Michigan. But Griffiths commitment to Rutgers shouldn’t take Michigan basketball out of the mix for Kante, although it’s a threat to get him too.

Kante also visited Rutgers with Griffiths earlier in May and according to the On3.com prediction machine, Rutgers is the current leader at 36 percent. Michigan is in third at 20 percent with Maryland also in second at 24 percent (chance to land commit).

Juwan Howard has really connected with Kante and he does a great job of selling Michigan to big men, which is pretty easy to do given his track record of developing guys like Hunter Dickinson and more dating back to his days in the NBA.

We’ll see if Kante keeps his visit. If he does, I still like Michigan’s chances to surge ahead but it’s still disappointing that Griffiths appears to be coming off the board, which will force the Wolverines to move on to other options.
