Michigan Baseball rolls past top-seeded Maryland in Big Ten tourney
Michigan baseball needed a magical week to try and make the NCAA tournament and after two days at the Big Ten Tournament, U-M is 2-0.
The Michigan baseball team has now played the two latest games ever recorded at Charles Schwab Field in Omaha, Nebraska, the site of the Big Ten tournament in 2022.
And for the second straight night, Michigan baseball won a game well after Midnight. On Friday, the Wolverines knocked off Illinois at 2:19 a.m. CST. Then, after waiting all day to play, Michigan upset top-seeded Maryland 15-8.
Michigan takes down Big Ten’s top seed
Maryland didn’t do itself any favors, especially after committing three errors and struggling with some passed balls late, but the Wolverines connected on 13 hits and two of them went for home runs in the seven-run, no-doubt victory over the Big Ten regular-season champion.
Matt Frey got the Wolverines on the board in the bottom of the first with an RBI double, but Maryland responded with runs in the second and third to claim the lead at 2-1.
In the third, Michigan scored four runs to take the lead as Frey brought home another run with a base hit and Riley Bertram plated two with a double.
Michigan added five more runs in the fourth and got another double from Bertram while Frey also drove in two runs on a single.
Maryland cut the lead to 10-7 heading into the bottom of the seventh inning but that’s when Tito Flores and Clark Elliott each went yard for the Wolverines in another five-run frame that put the game out of reach.
Cameron Weston came on in the ninth again and ended the game in a non-close situation. Willie Weiss got the win after allowing just one run in three innings of work.
Bertram was 4-for-5 with three RBI in the win for Michigan baseball. Frey was also 3-for-4 and drove in four runs as well. Elliott was 1-for-2 with a home run. He also drew three walks and scored four runs.
The Wolverines will now take on Penn State or Iowa on Saturday night around 5 PM CST.
