This 2022 Michigan football team is going to have the best offense Jim Harbaugh has had during his tenure as head coach and here are three reasons why.

With Jim Harbaugh as the head coach of Michigan football, the Wolverines have averaged 32 points per game, and more often than not, U-M has averaged over 30 points a season.

The two exceptions were Harbaugh’s two ugliest seasons in Ann Arbor — 2017 and 2020. Michigan averaged 25 points a game in 2017 as the Wolverines struggled with quarterback injuries and went 8-5.

2020 was the 2-4 disaster which seems like forever ago. Michigan football averaged 28 points per game that season but the entire team was a disaster.

Last year, Michigan averaged 35 a game. The defense was dominant too and while that side of the ball lost some key players such as Aidan Hutchinson, David Ojabo, Daxton Hill, and others, the offense is down just three starters and looks to be even better.

Only once in the Harbaugh era has Michigan football averaged 40 points a game on offense and that was back in 2016. But 2022, that will be the second time and this Wolverine offense will score more points than any Harbaugh has had at U-M, and here are three reasons why.

The best QB situation Michigan’s had under Harbaugh

It’s obvious that Michigan football has the best QB room it has ever had under Harbaugh and it’s not really even close. Cade McNamara is the incumbent and was third-team All-Big Ten last season after leading the Wolverines to a Big Ten title.

McNamara isn’t a former five-star like J.J. McCarthy but he was committed to Notre Dame and was top-10 at his position. He showed off that talent last season and people act like he won’t continue to get better. Look at Kenny Pickett.

I’m not saying McNamara is that guy. But his last season at Pitt was his best and there’s no doubt in my mind that Cade will be better in 2022. McCarthy is going to be better too. He’s healthy and throwing now and the competition will be going full-tilt this fall.

I still expect McNamara to start the opener, but eventually, I wouldn’t be shocked if McCarthy won the job. Either way, Michigan has two quarterbacks capable of leading this team to a championship, and a lot of points on the scoreboard.

If you ranked say the top-five Big Ten quarterbacks, it would be hard not to have both McCarthy and McNamara in the mix, which just reflects the strength of the position right now.
