Michigan football hosted its top target in the 2023 recruiting class, Dante Moore, for a visit this weekend, and here’s what the 5-star QB said about it.

Every Michigan football fan knows the importance of five-star quarterback recruit Dante Moore to the Wolverines. He’s one of the top prospects in the entire 2023 class and he’s the best QB recruit in the state in decades.

Theoretically, with Michigan football fresh off the best season it has had in decades, it should have been easier than ever for the Wolverines to push for Moore, especially with another talented quarterback J.J. McCarthy having such a great experience.

McCarthy didn’t start last season but he played meaningful snaps right away and contributed in a very real fashion to the Wolverines’ Big Ten championship.

Dante Moore could do that too. He might not start right away in Ann Arbor, but he would easily be the guy by his sophomore season, and I don’t see the QB depth chart as a huge concern.

But whether it’s been due to Jim Harbaugh showing interest in the NFL, or assistants like Josh Gattis leaving, Notre Dame pulled ahead at one point in this recruitment, and Michigan football has been trying to rally.

The Wolverines tried to get Moore on campus last month but he ended up going to Ohio State. The Buckeyes, after taking Dylan Raiola in 2024, don’t seem to be in the mix. And after getting Moore to campus this weekend, it feels like things are trending up.

The Maize and Blue Review teased a report that confidence is rising with Dante Moore after he spent all day on campus and took in a baseball game on Friday night.

Moore also did an interview with Hayes Fawcett of On3.com and here’s what he said:

"“I’ve been up there of course a million times, but going back up every time and having new conversations and re-connecting with players on the team is always a great feeling,” Moore said. “The visit overall was great, and of course, I have to respect them, like I said, about the day ones.”"

Moore referred to Michigan football as the day ones because head coach Jim Harbaugh was the first to offer him back when he was an eighth-grader. The two have long had a connection and as I’ve been saying, Harbaugh is the X-factor in this recruitment and it’s time to close.

Michigan football has work to do

This visit (unofficial) was a positive step in the right direction but there is a lot of work to do. Notre Dame has built a strong rapport with Moore and they have long been considered the favorite for a reason.

Oregon also shouldn’t be counted out. However, the Ducks are also pushing for Jaden Rashada, and also have four-star Avery Johnson scheduled for an official visit in June.

Michigan hasn’t offered any other quarterbacks outside of Arch Manning. Notre Dame has been involved with Johnson but Moore is clearly the top target.

Moore also seemed to enjoy his LSU visit and I wouldn’t count out Texas A&M either. But this recruitment still seems wide open and that’s pretty wild considering Moore is coming up on a decision.

Most quarterbacks decide before their senior season, so it’s crunch time. Michigan has some momentum after this visit, but can it capitalize on it?
