Michigan baseball beats Big Ten’s best again
Michigan baseball knows a thing or two about playing great at the end of the season and the Wolverines are getting hot again.
For the second straight game, Michigan baseball trailed the best team in the Big Ten heading into the weekend, Rutgers.
And for the second straight day, the Wolverines rallied past the Scarlet Knights for a (9-7) win as Michigan baseball, which is now 28-24 overall and 12-11 in the Big Ten, has won three straight and has momentum heading into the Big Ten Tournament.
Michigan beat Rutgers 9-6 on Thursday and that guaranteed the Wolverines a spot in the Big Ten Tournament and at this point in the season, that looks like their only hope of making the NCAA baseball tournament after a recent losing streak.
Michigan baseball rallies
Trailing 7-2, it looked like Michigan was going to fall below .500 in the Big Ten once again, but that’s before Joe Stewart changed the game with a single swing of the bat.
Michigan was able to plate a couple of runs on wild pitches in the bottom of the fifth inning and when Stewart came to the dish, he represented the tying run. Stewart jacked a home run on Thursday and the good vibes continued on Friday as he smashed a three-run, game-tying homer.
Jimmy Obertop came through with a two-run double in the bottom of the sixth inning to grab the lead and U-M got a stellar effort from closer Willie Weiss who held Rutgers scoreless for three innings to get the win. Cameron Weston got the save in the ninth for the second straight game.
Stewart led the Wolverines with three hits and three RBI. He also added a double. Obertop also managed two hits and two RBI, while Riley Bertram also notched two hits as Michigan baseball finished with nine.
Michigan will close out the regular season Saturday against Rutgers.
