Michigan baseball has rough weekend and is swept by Maryland
If Michigan baseball was going to improve its NCAA Tournament resume, this weekend’s series against Maryland was a chance to do it, but U-M got swept.
After three consecutive losses this weekend to Maryland and defeats in six of their last seven games, the Wolverines are now just one game above .500 at 25-24.
Maryland is one of the best teams in the Big Ten and was leading the Big Ten standings going into the week. Michigan baseball nearly rallied to win the first game but fell 8-7 and then was trampled on Saturday by a score of 20-6. 18th-ranked Maryland also won 15-10 on Sunday.
Jake Marti and Matt Frey both homered in Friday’s loss to the Terps as Michigan baseball scored a combined seven runs in the sixth and seventh innings to nearly come back from a 7-0 deficit. Connor O’Halloran got the loss on the mound after allowing six runs on six hits in just over three innings of work. He’s now 4-4 on the season. Frey had three hits and three RBI.
On Saturday, Michigan baseball started well enough and built a 3-0 lead after a home run in the second inning by Ted Burton. Yet, the Terps plated seven runs in the bottom of the second, as well as 10 combined in the seventh and eighth innings as they totaled 17 hits.
Frey hit another home run in the loss for Michigan and led the team with two hits again. Clark Elliott and Joey Velazquez both had home runs Sunday and the Wolverines again grabbed the lead before the Maryland offense took over and ran away with it thanks to 15 runs on 14 hits.
The Wolverines notched 13 hits of their own and scored six runs in the top of the ninth. Michigan will be back in action on Tuesday against Michigan State.
