Will Johnson will be Big Ten’s best freshman

According to the 247 sports composite rankings, there are six five-star freshmen entering the Big Ten for the 2022 season. Penn State actually leads with three, Ohio State has two and Michigan football has one of its own in Will Johnson.

Johnson is a 6-foot-3, 190-pound corner who ranked 14th overall in the 2023 class and third at his position. He’s going to wear No. 2 this season and that’s fitting because I think he’ll have one of the best freshman seasons we’ve seen at Michigan since Charles Woodson.

Johnson should start right away this fall and he’s going to play a big part in filling the void (in talent) left by Daxton Hill. Johnson was a high school wide receiver and has tremendous ball skills in addition to being an elite man-to-man cover guy.

He’s my bet to be covering the other team’s top wideout by the end of the season because his length and speed offer something Michigan hasn’t had in a long time, maybe since Woodson.

Johnson isn’t afraid to tackle either and I think we’ll see him make a bunch of plays next season, as well as a couple of interceptions, which will be enough to earn him Defensive Freshman of the Year honors in the Big Ten next season.
