J.J. McCarthy eventually wins the QB job

Let me start by saying I love Cade McNamara. He’s a Big-Ten championship starting quarterback as he said and he will start the season as the No. 1 guy.

However, there is just a difference in talent and upside between Cade and McCarthy. We saw that in the Orange Bowl against Georgia. The offense was effective with McCarthy and not so much with Cade, who doesn’t have the mobility or the arm strength.

That being said, I still think McNamara is going to play well next season. He makes smart decisions and rarely put Michigan football in bad spots last season. The problem is you can only beat elite teams playing that way for so long.

If Michigan football wants to beat Ohio State again next season, McCarthy is going to need to be the guy under center. Jim Harbaugh has said that both are going to play until it becomes clear one should be the guy and at some point this season, I believe it becomes clear that McCarthy is the best option.

And that will have more to do with McCarthy’s exceptional talents than it will with any poor play from McNamara who I still think is a top-5 QB in the Big Ten.
