5 Teams Michigan Football should play in the future Vol. 2

Coastal Carolina Chanticleers, home-and-home

Fans might groan and grumble about this first opponent, but I think that playing a home-and-home against Coastal Carolina would be very fun. The Chanticleers are an up-and-coming program that just got good in their conference in the last few years.

They have a potential first-round draft pick in QB Grayson McCall for the 2023 NFL Draft. They have seen an uptick in draft picks since their spectacular season in 2020. Former Michigan PG DeVante Jones transferred to Michigan from Coastal Carolina, so I’m sure he could back me up in saying that the opponent isn’t that bad.

While there’s obviously no guarantee that Coastal Carolina would be good when Michigan would schedule them, they would be a program that would at least have some past success, even if it was only for a 2-3 year stretch.

When BYU scheduled Coastal Carolina in the 2020-21 season out of the blue, it made for primetime television. The game came together so quickly because of COVID, as if you’ll recall, Liberty was originally the opponent scheduled for Coastal, but they had to drop out because of COVID.

When BYU played against Coastal, College GameDay actually made their way to South Carolina for the game. So, yes, Coastal did get some exposure, and having a blue blood program like Michigan football come to their field might again get them the College GameDay experience, and Michigan probably wouldn’t be scheduling some complete pushover almost FCS-level opponent like Furman, or Georgia State or something like that. Also, again, one of my rules was to choose an opponent that wasn’t from a major Group of Five conference.

The opponent would be at least respectable, and did I mention that Coastal has one of the most colorful and unique fields in college football? If you don’t know what it looks like or forgot, look it up. I want Michigan to play on that.
