Michigan baseball rallies and beats Ohio State in walk-off fashion
Michigan baseball kept its winning streak going as the Wolverines rallied from a five-run deficit to take the first of a three-game set against Ohio State.
For most of the game, it felt like Michigan baseball was going to fall to hated Ohio State. The Buckeyes grabbed a five-run lead early and going into the ninth inning, the Buckeyes hadn’t trailed.
Some timely hits and some mistakes in the top of the second led to an early five-run inning and after Michigan baseball trimmed it to 5-3, Ohio State responded with a few more runs, which gave it a 7-3 advantage heading to the bottom of the seventh.
Michigan added two runs in the inning and it was the start of four straight innings with at least one run scored. The lead was trimmed to two on this single from Joey Velazquez, who is also a member of the football team.
After the Buckeyes and Wolverines each added a run in the eighth, Ohio State led 8-6 and the Buckeyes were one out away from the win when Jimmy Obertop stepped to the plate.
Obertop’s home run tied the game in dramatic fashion and was the first time the score was even since 0-0. In the extra frame, Michigan baseball retired Ohio State in order, and then, in the bottom of the 10th, Clark Elliott delivered a game-winning single.
Michigan baseball has won four in a row over rivals
After four straight wins over Michigan State (three last weekend) and Ohio State, Michigan is now 21-15 overall, as well as 7-3 in the Big Ten.
Elliott had three hits and the game-winning RBI for the Wolverines. Obertop added two hits and drove in three runs, while Jack Van Mortel contributed with two hits (one double) and three RBI.
Noah Rennard got the win after four solid innings of relief. He allowed six hits but just two runs and struck out four. He also retired the side in the top of the 10th.
Michigan and Ohio State will meet again Saturday at 2 p.m. (central) on the Big Ten network.
