New Crop of Defensive Stars

Last season, Michigan entered last season knowing it would get high level play from Aidan Hutchinson and Daxton Hill. David Ojabo joined them in that group and now the trio is set to become high draft picks in NFL Draft this month. Replacing them will be difficult, but Michigan football still has a ton of talent on defense.

Cornerback DJ Turner was one of the Big Ten’s best corners in the second half of last season. He looked the part on Saturday and had a pass breakup. Safety RJ Moten showed off impressive range and was third on the team with five tackles. Moten played a ton last season, but with Hill and Brad Hawkins departing, he should be entrenched as a starter.

Interior defensive lineman Kris Jenkins was disruptive in the run game and he generated pressure with a sack. Jaylen Harrell had a sack and three tackles on the day. He is in a fierce competition to earn a starting edge spot, and he should be one of the leaders heading into fall camp. Braiden McGregor is back healthy after battling injuries to start his career. He looked the part on Saturday.

Mike Sainristil is another Wolverine that is playing both sides of the ball and he had a strong day at corner. That included a pass breakup on a deep ball intended for Darrius Clemons.

True freshman Will Johnson earned a start and he made a strong play to break up a pass in the endzone in the first quarter.

I was also really impressed with safety Jordan Morant. The redshirt sophomore is another one that has battled injuries, but he was healthy and all over the field on Saturday.
