Cade McNamara

As Michigan enters the 2022 college football season, one question remains in the Wolverines’ locker room: who will be the starting quarterback week one? After a solid season as QB1 in 2021, Cade McNamara plans to retain his starting role in the coming season. That being said, sophomore JJ McCarthy is hot on his tail.

A few weeks back, most Michigan fans were devastated at the news of JJ McCarthy’s injury to his throwing shoulder, though the damage will likely not require surgery. Still, McCarthy will see limited reps during spring ball and potentially even fall camp, meaning the veteran McNamara is almost guaranteed to nab the starting job at the season’s start.

"“I am a Big Ten Championship-winning starting quarterback, and that is how I see it” — Cade McNamara on how he feels about the quarterback battle heading into 2022"

Though McNamara does not have the same level of talent on his side as McCarthy does, he does have two things going for him: experience and past success. In 2021 the Wolverines, led by Cade McNamara, finished with a 12-2 record and won the Big Ten.

Now a senior, McNamara has the potential to win Michigan’s starting job for the second year in a row, and from the sounds of it, the senior QB is confident in doing so.
