2023 TE Deakon Tonielli (IL)

Michigan football already has one tight end currently committed in four-star Andrew Rappleyea (MA), but that does not seem to be stopping their pursuit of a second tight end for this class. Tonielli is a high three-star recruit on the On3 consensus, ranking as the seventh-best player in the state of Illinois.

The Wolverines have had a lot of success in Illinois, securing recent commitments from players like linebacker Jimmy Rolder, wide receiver Tyler Morris, and quarterback J.J. McCarthy. Tonielli would represent Grant Newsome’s first win on the recruiting trail should he commit, as Newsome became tight ends coach after Rappleyea had already committed. Additionally, the Wolverines hosted Tonielli on a visit this past weekend.

2023 DB Winston Berglund (IN)

A recent addition to the Wolverines recruiting board, Berglund was recently offered and was another name on the visitors list from this past weekend. A 6’1, 195 lbs. safety out of Indiana powerhouse high school Carmel, he also holds offers from some other Big Ten teams such as Indiana, Minnesota, Northwestern, and Purdue, along with schools like Missouri and Iowa State as well.

Similarly to how Tonielli would represent Newsome’s first commitment as tight ends coach, Berglund (or ’24 DB Jacob Oden) would represent the same achievement for Jay Harbaugh as safeties coach.

Jay Harbaugh has been a tremendous recruiter at any spot he has coached to this point, and securing a promising Midwestern product like Berglund would help him continue that trend at a new position.
