Following another quality win over Rutgers earlier this week, Michigan basketball has moved up in the latest bracketology projection.

It has been a crazy week for Michigan basketball, with a lot happening since last weekend but following a key victory over Rutgers on Wednesday, the Wolverines have received a bump in the latest bracketology projections.

According to ESPN’s Joe Lunardi, Michigan basketball was among the last four teams in his projected NCAA Tournament field going into the Rutgers game.

That means Michigan basketball would be playing in the first four. But after the Wolverines beat Rutgers, another team on the bubble, 71-62, U-M moved out of that range and is now one of the last four teams to receive a first-round bye.

Michigan basketball is listed by Lunardi as a No. 10 seed and in his projected bracket, the Wolverines would take on Marquette in Indianapolis.

However, in the latest bracket projection from Jerry Palm of CBS Sports, the Wolverines are still among the last four teams projected in the field of 68 and that’s after the win over Rutgers.

Obviously, there is still work to do to get off the bubble completely. The Wolverines are 9-7 overall in the Big Ten and 15-11. While that’s a lot of losses, they have a lot of quality wins.

Michigan has beaten San Diego State, Purdue, and Rutgers at home, while also knocking off Indiana and Iowa on the road.

Michigan still has work to do

Michigan basketball still has four very tough games remaining with the next three at home against Illinois, Iowa, and Michigan State, before a road trip to Ohio State.

If the Wolverines win two of those games, they should be in the field without worry. A 10-10 finish in the Big Ten regular-season likely will mean work to do in the Big Ten Tournament and that’s not where Michigan basketball wants to be.

Old friend Illinois will be in Ann Arbor Sunday and even though Michigan hasn’t beaten Illinois since 2019, Hunter Dickinson didn’t play in the last matchup and the Wolverines have been on a roll at home, so it’s going to be a fascinating matchup.

A win would also go a long way towards clinching a bid.
