Michigan Basketball: 3 takeaways from essential win over Rutgers
By Nick Popio
3. Michigan adds another feather in their cap with a preeminent victory
Rutgers came into this one on a roll. They’ve won four of their last five and were considered by some to be the hottest club in the Big Ten.
The Scarlet Knights lost to Purdue on Sunday which got forgotten because of the Michigan/Wisconsin debacle but looks to be a bonafide tournament team with two weeks left in the regular season.
The Wolverines sealed the deal without starting four Moussa Diabate and key reserve Terrance Williams, which has to be factored into the equation. Both will be back after serving their one-game suspension on Sunday afternoon in what is going to be Michigan’s most pivotal confrontation to date regarding its postseason hopes.
A win over Illinois would solidly put Michigan basketball in the field of 68. A loss would bring more questions to a group that doesn’t want any part of that.
Michigan will be looking for revenge from a year ago when they got blasted at home by the Illini. Michigan hasn’t beaten the Illini since 2019 and at this point in the season is in dire need of another signature win for the tournament committee to ponder.
