Michigan football will be back on the field for spring practices next week and here’s a look at what the depth chart could look like.

It was a good week for Michigan football. Jim Harbaugh signed his contract extension earlier this week and talked enthusiastically about the spring practices starting next week.

Harbaugh didn’t apologize for his interest in the NFL and he shouldn’t. He was honest about what he was doing and he was also honest in his excitement to return as Michigan football’s head coach. The Paul Finebaum’s can say what they want, Jim loves this job.

And when he talked to Will Johnson about it, one of his points was that Michigan football was going to have a pretty good team in 2022. Harbaugh wanted to win the Super Bowl. But now, he has his sights set on a national title.

The process for next season has already started. Guys have been hitting it hard in the weight room and spring ball starts next week.

With that in mind, here’s our look at Michigan football’s projected starting lineup heading into spring ball.

QB starters: Cade McNamara and/or J.J. McCarthy

I’m going with the dreaded or here because I really think this is a 50/50 quarterback battle for Michigan football. If there was a game this weekend, it’s my belief that Cade McNamara would start. He’s earned that right and he was third-team All-Big Ten last season.

But J.J. McCarthy is uber-talented and the kid is determined. He’s going to be great and I’m not sure how long you can keep him on the bench.

A timeshare situation like we had last year makes sense, at least until someone emerges as the clear-cut guy. But with McCarthy, it only seems like a matter of time before he just gets too good to keep on the bench and that’s no slight on Cade, who is a great quarterback is his own right.
