Michigan football landed the commitment of in-state 2023 running back Cole Cobana and here’s what it means for the Wolverines.

During the Jim Harbaugh saga, it was hard to focus at all on Michigan football recruiting because, without Harbaugh, things would have changed drastically.

Even if there was an in-house hire, it was going to hurt recruiting. However, the Wolverines still seemed to have a strong shot at Cole Cobana who set Saturday as his decision date even during this whole Jim Harbaugh to the NFL mess.

Cobana grew up as a Michigan State fan but when the Spartans got a new running backs coach, it opened the door for Michigan football and Mike Hart helped bring it home.

Cobana was expected to commit to the Wolverines leading up to his announcement and he has now made it official, giving the Wolverines their third in-state commitment in this class, as well as the No. 362 player overall in the 2023 recruiting class.

What the commitment means for Michigan football

While some fans will roll their eyes and complain about Cobana being a three-star prospect, he just ran a 4.34 in a recent 40-yard dash and is really explosive.

Like Blake Corum or Donovan Edwards, Cobana can do more than run and is a skilled pass catcher.

His addition to the 2023 recruiting class as the fifth verbal pledge is key. He’s the seventh-ranked player in the state and with three of the first five commits coming from Michigan, the Wolverines are starting to get some in-state momentum.

The big key is just to get the entire recruiting operation back on track. Michigan football had lost all momentum with Harbaugh looking at the NFL and now, after beating out Michigan State for a recruit that both schools really wanted, U-M is back on track.

And Cobana is going to be a great fit in this offense and gives the Wolverines another skill guy in 2023 along with Semaj Morgan and four-star tight end Andrew Rappleyea to be excited about.
