Grading Michigan Basketball’s huge win over Indiana
Handing out grades for Michigan basketball’s enormous win over Indiana on Sunday.
It took most of the season, but we finally saw the Michigan basketball team that we expected to see this season in Assembly Hall on Sunday.
Hunter Dickinson was absolutely dominant from the jump and he looked as good as any player in the Big Ten and controlled things on both ends of the floor.
Caleb Houstan was on fire and Moussa Diabate made eye-opening plays. Everything was working and following the 80-62 win by Michigan basketball here are the grades.
Bigs
Hunter Dickinson: A+
You can’t play better than Hunter Dickinson did on Sunday. He wasn’t just dominating on the offensive end either. He held Trayce Jackson-Davis in check and his passing and vision were the key to Michigan getting so many open 3-pointers.
That and Dickinson proving to be unstoppable down low and with his jumper. His step-back jumper was a thing of beauty and if he can keep knocking down 3-pointers, he will be unguardable.
Hell, he has been and he’s leading the most efficient offense in the Big Ten and if he continues this, I don’t see why he shouldn’t be considered for Big Ten Player of the Year.
And if NBA scouts don’t see how much he’s improved, they are missing the boat. I’m not saying he’s going to be a first-round pick or anything, but he’s shown vast improvement as a shooter, a defender, and a passer.
Moussa Diabate: A
Michigan basketball attempted 14 free throws against Indiana and seven of them were from Moussa Diabate. When he’s isolated, defenders have a tough time keeping him away from the basket and I thought his defense was solid too.
As much as Caleb Houstan is coming into his own, Michigan’s other five-star freshman is doing the same. Another sign of his growth was his find of Houstan for a 3-pointer early in the game and combined, Diabate and Dickinson combined for 35 points, 17 rebounds, six assists, as well as 13 free throw attempts. Diabate also grabbed three of the five offensive rebounds.
Brandon Johns: A
Brandon Johns was as dialed in during his 10 minutes against Indiana as he has been all season. His blocked shot was stellar and really provided a boost and when he drained that 3-pointer, you just knew it was going to be Michigan’s day.
His offensive rating was 2.50 which means Michigan averaged 2.5 points per possession while he was on the floor. That’s staggering and his defensive rating was 0.95. He was stellar in the post and his defense has always been underrated. It’s just a matter of him being focused.
If Johns plays like that again, it will be huge in some of these games against Purdue, Michigan State, and the rest of the Big Ten.
