An update on Michigan Basketball players in the NBA
Trey Burke
Ugh. Whenever I hear Trey Burke’s name, it is always bittersweet. Sweet because of the Michigan career that he had for us, with all of the highlights and memories, but bitter because of the potential career he could have in the NBA. We’ve all seen flashes here and there, for the better part of Trey Burke’s NBA career. He was out of the league a few years ago, came back into the league via the 76ers, was picked up by the Mavs and here we are.
Like I said, he has shown a lot of flashes, and has games where he’s a scoring machine, but he also goes through long stretches where he’s a non-factor. What’s allowed him staying power in the league right now is his dominant stretch of games in the NBA playoffs in the ’19-20 season.
If Trey Burke can find that level of efficiency coming off the bench, then he will stick. He’s currently 29 and in the prime of his career. This year, Trey Burke is averaging 6.6 ppg, 1 reb, and 1.9 assists per game. He’s played in 22 total games this season. We’ll see if Burke is able to step it up. He still has it in him. He’s one of those Lou Williams-types that can get hot at any moment because he’s that talented. But he’ll have to prove himself, be healthy, and take advantage of his spot minutes.
Trey Burke is a microcosm of the Mavs issues as a team. A talented team that is unable to get over the hump in the Western Conference.
That’s Trey. He’s a talented player that is unable to get over his scoring slumps to help his team advance to greater heights. I’m not saying he has to be a Trae Young. But averaging six points a game is not Burke-esque. He should be averaging 14-15 ppg or more right now.
