Michigan basketball started fast against Maryland on Tuesday night and notched an important Big Ten victory in the return of Hunter Dickinson.

The Michigan basketball team was in a must-win situation on Tuesday night against Maryland and that meant it was the perfect time for Hunter Dickinson to come back.

Dickinson missed the game against Illinois due to COVID-19 and while he was a game-time decision, he got the start and dominated throughout.

The most impressive thing is that Dickinson got Michigan basketball going without even scoring that much. He did score on a post-up early but also found freshman Caleb Houstan for a wide-open 3-pointer and Houstan hit.

That led to eight first-half points for Houstan and a 5-for-5 start as well as three total makes from beyond the arc. Michigan didn’t shoot the ball incredibly well from deep but the Wolverines don’t have to be perfect — they just need some spacing.

Dickinson, Eli Brooks and DeVante Jones all hit from deep too, and Jones hit twice, while Dickinson, Brooks, and Jones each had three assists or more.

The second half was a little worrisome but Michigan held on for a huge win and the Wolverines can get to .500 in the Big Ten on Sunday with a road win over the Indiana Hoosiers.

Here are our gut reactions to Michigan basketball’s win over Maryland.

Gut reactions

  • Hunter Dickinson brought it on both ends of the floor.
  • Caleb Houstan hopefully found some confidence.
  • Frankie Collins can get buckets. He’s also a shot creator.
  • DeVante Jones had another really good night.
  • Dickinson dominated the first half and barely scored.
  • He did the opposite in the second half and finished the game.
  • Michigan needs to maintain this defensive intensity.
  • Moussa Diabate and Houstan had their best games in a while. Maybe all season combined.
  • Multiple freshmen combined for over 35 points.
  • Juwan Howard gets triggered by Maryland.
  • This was the performance we needed to see from Michigan basketball.
  • A win Sunday and this season feels a lot different.
