Michigan Football: How recruiting skill positions is going in 2023
By Alex Hinton
Michigan football picked up a huge commitment over the weekend when four-star tight end Andrew Rappleyea gave his pledge. He is the fourth commitment in the 2023 class and the second on the offensive side of the ball.
With a pair of commitments already on the offensive board and a target board starting to form, could things be falling into place for the Wolverines? Here is where things stand at the moment at the skill positions.
Quarterback
Last week, Michigan football extended an offer to five-star Arch Manning, the nephew of Peyton and Eli Manning and billed as the next great Manning QB. He is only the second 2023 QB Michigan has offered thus far.
Despite that, it would be a major shock if Manning donned the maize and blue. Manning, a New Orleans native, is expected to play his college ball in the South and has Ole Miss, Alabama, Texas, and Clemson among his top suitors. I view his offer as a way of establishing a relationship with his high school coach and possibly growing ties in a fertile recruiting area.
Either way, the top priority remains Dante Moore, the five-star out of Martin Luther King HS in Detroit. Moore was recently named a First Team Junior All-American by Max Preps after throwing for 3.050 yards, 40 touchdowns, and just three interceptions. Moore has not named an outright leader yet, schools like Notre Dame, Michigan State, Ohio State, Cincinnati, and Penn State join Michigan in his top group.
However, Michigan has made it clear to Moore that he is the top quarterback prospect on its board. Michigan took two quarterbacks in the 2022 class, three-stars Jayden Denegal and Alex Orjii, so it can afford to wait a little on Moore before moving onto other quarterback prospects. However, the sooner it is able to get Moore on board, the easier it will be to get the rest of the class in the fold. Particularly on the offensive side of the ball.
