The defensive effort was top notch

Michigan basketball did plenty of good things on the offensive end of the floor but the most impressive thing about the Wolverines’ win was their defensive effort.

Only one Southern Utah player reached double figures and it was Dre Martin with 12. John Knight who averaged 18 coming in was held to six thanks to a stellar defensive outing by Eli Brooks. Knight was held to an offensive rating of 0.50, while Southern Utah finished at 0.71 points per possession.

Brooks didn’t have a great game on the offensive end, but the Wolverines don’t need him to be the first or second option. But he had the best defensive rating of any starter and the box score didn’t even tell the tale of his impact.

Jones finished with the highest rating of any Michigan basketball player and had a dominant performance. But the defensive effort was the most important thing I saw and if that translates to something Michigan can do on a game-to-game basis, then this team can win a lot of games.
