Michigan basketball will be back in action Saturday night against an opponent from the Big Sky in Southern Utah. Here’s a look at the odds and a prediction.

If you have followed Michigan basketball over the last five years or so, you will be somewhat familiar with the Big Sky Conference.

In back-to-back years, Michigan took on Montana in the opening round of the NCAA tournament — both wins and Saturday night, Southern Utah, the reigning Big Sky regular-season champion and a team ranked in the top 125 of the Kenpom rankings, comes to Ann Arbor.

The Wolverines need to get back on track and are currently 6-4 after an ugly loss at home last Saturday to Minnesota.

This is a buy game for Michigan basketball but it won’t be easy. The Wolverines are expected to win but the Thunderbirds have a dynamic point guard in John Knight and a stellar 3-point shooter in Dre Martin.

Knight is the kind of guard Michigan has struggled to guard and he’s been able to get to the basket at will this season, so that’s something to watch.

Southern Utah does start a 6-foot-11 center in Jason Spurgin but he plays just over 20 minutes a game and after that, there are just players on the roster at 6-foot-9 and they don’t play much.

Hunter Dickinson should dominate but expect the Thunderbirds to force the ball out of his hand. They work hard to force jump shots and are 299th in the nation in 2-point attempts allowed.

Michigan will get 3-point opportunities, Dickinson included, and the Wolverines will need to make some or this game could get worrisome.

This Michigan basketball team needs to find some consistency and these players need to find their roles before the heart of Big Ten play. However, Southern Utah is a veteran team and is capable of beating Michigan if the Wolverines don’t show up.

Hunter Dickinson should be able to post an easy 20 and 10, but Caleb Houstan and others need to knock down shots. I think that happens and Michigan wins it 80-62.
