Michigan Football adds not one, but two elite commitments
Michigan football continues to build momentum on the recruiting trail with the commitments of Raylen Wilson and Andrew Gentry.
Wednesday wound up being another great day to be a Michigan Wolverine, as the Michigan football program landed two key commitments in the 2022 and 2023 recruiting classes.
One of those moves was expected Wednesday and that was the addition of elite 2023 linebacker Jaylen Wilson. Out of Tallahassee, Florida, Wilson was highly-sought after by basically every program in the ACC and all the big names.
His final two were Michigan and Georgia, two teams, that will play in the College Football Playoff later this month and as the crystal ball predicted he would, Wilson pledged to Michigan football.
At 6-foot-2, 213 pounds, Wilson is ranked as the No. 74 player in the 2023 recruiting class and is a freakish athlete with an 11.19 in the 100-meter dash.
As Steve Wiltfong of 247 sports pointed out, Michigan has major momentum on the recruiting trail right now with five total commitments since the Ohio State game.
Wilson is easily the most significant. He’s a top-100 recruit with the ability to make an immediate impact down the road. The fact that the Wolverines beat out Georgia for his commitment only shows how far the recruiting operation has come in the last few months.
Of course, winning helps.
Another top recruit resurfaces
The way Michigan football has won has to impress offensive lineman and that thesis was tested successfully by the Wolverines in the recruitment of Andrew Gentry.
Gentry is a 6-foot-8 offensive lineman who committed to Virginia out of high school in 2020. But there is a new head coach and that opened the door for the Wolverines and Jim Harbaugh.
Michigan football was a finalist for Gentry before and on Wednesday, he announced his commitment and his plan on signing with U-M. He will join the team in the spring.
Gentry has been on a religious mission but is now ready to get back to playing football and Virginia’s loss is Michigan’s gain as he was ranked 88th overall in the 2020 class.
There has been some concern about five-star offensive tackle Josh Conerly Jr. Michigan football was trending with crystal ball projections but USC and Washington are making another push and confidence seems to be fading on the Michigan side.
Now, Michigan can take both Gentry and Conerly. But if Michigan does miss on Conerly, landing Gentry will soften the blow and add another elite offensive lineman to the mix.
Michigan’s momentum on the recruiting trail isn’t just limited to Wilson and Gentry. The Wolverines are hosting elite wideout Darrius Clemons this weekend and with Oregon undergoing a coaching change, Michigan could have a chance for the pass catcher with Michigan ties.
Clemons is ranked 130th overall in the 2022 class, as well as 19th among wideouts. And with just one wideout committed, it would be huge for Michigan football.
But the Wolverines have momentum and it’s great to see them capitalize on it.
