Michigan basketball will take on San Deigo State this afternoon and the Wolverines are in desperate need of a win.

The start of the season has been ugly for the Michigan basketball squad which started the season ranked in the top five and is now sitting at 4-3.

Arizona and North Carolina both handled the Wolverines with relative ease and cleared their benches with a few minutes left to go. That’s on top of a tough loss to Seton Hall.

San Diego State is another tough opponent. The Aztecs, who used to be coached by Steve Fisher, are now coached by Brian Dutcher who was the lead recruiter of Juwan Howard when he played at Michigan under Fisher.

Dutcher’s team is tenacious. The Aztecs play outstanding defense and like Michigan, are a grind-it-out sort of team. Neither shoots the ball well from 3-point range either.

Matt Bradley and Trey Pulliam are the SDSU’s two leading scorers at 6-foot-3 and 6-foot-4. The Aztecs start four guys under 6-foot-4 and their frontcourt is 6-foot-7 and 6-foot-10.

We’ll break down the odds, as well as offer a prediction and also tell you how to watch.

Michigan basketball vs San Diego State Odds and Prediction

Michigan is an 8.5-point favorite in this game against San Diego State and the over/under is 125.5 according to the odds from WynnBet.

The Wolverines have dropped to 18th on Kenpom, while San Diego State is 43rd. Hunter Dickinson will have to get going but the Aztecs making nothing easy, even inside.

Offensive rebounding will also be key and Michigan needs production from Moussa Diabate, as well as Caleb Houstan at the 3-point line.

The Wolverines have to find a way to take care of the ball and the issues at point guard have not been exaggerated. We’ll see what kind of adjustments Juwan Howard has, but this feels more like gut-check time and a guy like Dickinson needs to step up and lead with a big-time performance.

My hope is that he delivers. I’ll give Michigan the win in this one, but it’s close 62-56.
