Michigan Basketball: Takeaways, grades from loss to Arizona
Michigan basketball was humbled by Arizona on Sunday night and here are three takeaways as well as grades for the Wolverines.
Michigan basketball played so poorly on Sunday night in Las Vegas that Juwan Howard pulled his starters a few minutes early because the competitive phase of the game was over.
It was actually over about mid-way through the second half, probably even earlier. The Wolverines didn’t show up and their flaws, which there are many, were on full display.
Arizona dominated in the paint and turned the second half into a slam-dunk show. Michigan gave up way too many easy finishes and the effort wasn’t up to par.
Michigan basketball is now 3-2 and after an 18-point loss, here are our takeaways.
Michigan basketball was terrible on both ends
There really isn’t a single positive thing to take out of this one. Michigan needs to learn from it, but then the coaching staff should burn the film because it was a disaster.
The offensive rating was 0.88 points per possession, while the defense allowed Arizona to score 1.14. Michigan made a single 3-point shot and Arizona effectively took Hunter Dickinson out of the game with double teams.
The Wolverines couldn’t make them pay for doubling on Dickinson and the 18 turnovers were also crippling. It was just a demolition and while we all expected Michigan basketball to contend for the Big Ten championship, this doesn’t even feel like a team that deserves to be ranked right now.
There is a lot of talent on this team and things will get turned around but the loss to Arizona was bleak.
