Previewing the Michigan defense against Maryland

Michigan football enters the game against Maryland ranked eighth in total defense, fourth in scoring defense, and eighth in passing defense. Michigan’s defensive line has been its strong point so far this season, led by projected first-round draft picks Aidan Hutchinson and David Ojabo.

Hutchinson and Ojabo, both edge rushers, have each recorded 10 sacks so far this season. This duo is the only pair of teammates to record 10 or more sacks in a single season in the past five years. Look for both Ojabo and Hutchinson to attack Maryland’s offensive line, which is ranked 63rd in sacks allowed according to NCAA.com.

Both edge rushers are also coming off of monster performances against Penn State last weekend, with Ojabo recording two sacks and Hutchinson piling on three of his own.

Michigan’s linebackers and defensive backs will be asked to do the same thing that they have done all season long: let no one behind them and force their opponents into uncomfortable situations that create turnovers or waste downs.

Though Michigan has given up a substantial amount of yards this season, they have not been giving up many points. “Bend but don’t break” as the saying goes, has seemingly been first-year defensive coordinator Mike MacDonald’s motto this season.

Because of this, Michigan football has forced many opponents to settle for field goals inside of the red zone which has led to victories such as the 21-17 victory over Penn State, and the 32-29 win over Nebraska.

Michigan’s defense should have a great impact on Saturday as it has all season; look for them to assert themselves early and often.
