Michigan fans, Enjoy Aidan Hutchinson and David Ojabo While You Can
By Alex Hinton
When this season began, Michigan football knew it would be able to count on Aidan Hutchinson to be a consistent force on the edge.
However, Hutchinson has been one of the best players in the country regardless of position. After a dominant performance against Penn State, Hutchinson was named the Big Ten’s Defensive Player of the Week. He had seven tackles, 3.5 tackles for loss, three sacks, and a forced fumble. Hutchinson is now up to 10 sacks on the season.
However as dominant as Hutchinson has been, Michigan football needed someone to step up on the other side of him so teams could not double him every play and take him out of the game.
David Ojabo has done that and then some. Ojabo was also dominant against Penn State with four tackles, two tackles for loss, two sacks, and a forced fumble.
Ojabo is 2nd nationally with five forced fumbles, although we know he should really have six. Ojabo also has 10 sacks this season joining Hutchinson and the duo made some history in the process.
The Michigan single-season sack record is 12 and with at least three games (hopefully more) remaining, Hutchinson and Ojabo both have a chance to break it.
Additionally, Michigan had to have that game against Penn State and its two-star pass rushers took the game and were arguably the two best players on the field. However, Michigan fans should enjoy them because they won’t be together much longer.
Hutchinson is a senior and he will be a top-10 pick in next year’s NFL Draft. However, Ojabo is skyrocketing up draft boards. ESPN’s Mel Kiper has him No.10 on his big board ($) while Dane Brugler of The Athletic($) has him 26th overall.
Now, I was high on Ojabo in the offseason. I predicted he would have eight sacks this season, but even I could not see this coming. Ojabo is in his first year as a starter, but it would be hard to blame him if he moved on to the NFL.
One thing that is clear is Michigan has the best edge duo in the country and it is not close. Michigan is going to need Hutchinson and Ojabo to come up big again to beat Ohio State on November 27th.
Ohio State has one of the best offensive lines in the country, but Michigan has the edge rushers to challenge them.
