Michigan Football: 3 takeaways from win over Northwestern
By Nick Popio
The coaching staff is dead set on McNamara over McCarthy
J.J. McCarthy saw plenty of action in the win, but Cade McNamara still holds the edge at quarterback according to the decision-makers.
McNamara wasn’t flashy, like usual, but he continues to safely protect the football and basically dink and dunk his way down the field to do whatever it takes to get points.
Fox announcer Joel Klatt wasn’t mincing any words with his spot on, critical judgment when it comes to the McNamara/McCarthy quarterback duel.
He sees McNamara as the consistent, yet average, nonathletic quarterback and McCarthy as the guy with the major upside who may have to be the go-to guy, because of his abilities when November rolls around when Michigan could be trailing when it matters the most.
As long as Michigan football keeps winning and doesn’t put itself in a hole that the Wolverines can’t dig themselves out of, then McNamara will remain the starter.
Until that moment comes, and it might be on the horizon sooner rather than later, the typical social media criticism of McNamara is absolutely useless and, to an extent, somewhat laughable.
