Michigan Hockey notches a top-5 win, cracks ESPN Top plays

The expectations are high for the Michigan hockey team and on Friday night, the Wolveirnes showed why with a win over the No. 5 team in the country.

Michigan hockey is off to a 3-0 start and the Wolverines showed they are for real in terms of being national title contenders with a 5-1 rout over fifth-ranked Minnesota-Duluth Friday night.

The two teams met in the semifinals of the Ice Breaker Tournament and was the first meeting since the 2011 national championship game.

Michigan hockey fell behind 1-0 in the first period, but it didn’t stay that way for long as Luke Hughes, the fourth overall pick by the New Jersey Devils, scored his first career goal to even the score at 1-1.

It stayed that way until Michigan’s  Brendan Brisson scored an incredible goal flipping the puck in between his legs past the goalie in the second to give the Wolverines the lead. It even made the ESPN Top 10 plays list at No. 4.

Matty Beniers, who went 2nd overall to the Seattle Kraken in last year’s NHL draft, scored the next goal to make it 3-1 and then added a fifth goal for the Wolverines in the third, thanks to an assist from Owen Power, the No. 1 pick in last year’s draft. Kent Johnson, who was the fifth overall pick in the draft too, also had an assist in the 5-1 victory.

Michigan hockey faces No. 1 team next

The win improved Michigan hockey to 3-0 on the season and also set up another test for the Wolverines on Saturday who will face top-ranked Minnesota State in the Ice Breaker final.

Both Minnesota-Duluth and Minnesota State were Frozen Four participants last season and if the Wolverines are able to win on Saturday, the hype will only continue to grow for what could easily be the most talented team in the country.

The first puck will drop shortly after 5 PM EST and according to mgoblog.com, it will be streamed live on NCHC.tv.
