Michigan Football: 3 things Wolverines must fix during the bye week
2: The WRs need to be better
Even though I mentioned improvements that Cade needs to make, not everything is on him. The wide receivers need to step up moving forward.
Whether it be Roman Wilson, Daylen Baldwin, or Cornelius Johnson, Michigan football needs at least one of these guys to separate themselves from the pack and be a go-to option for Cade, or at the least, much more consistent that’s they have been.
Overall, I’d say Michigan has been getting just enough production from their WR core to stay 6-0, but it’s just that, just enough. None of those teams that Michigan got just enough production from were ranked.
If Michigan thinks it can keep getting by with just enough production from the WRs against MSU, PSU, and OSU, then they will be in for a horrible realization come game-time.
The WRs have been marred by the dropsies, inability to get consistent separation, and haven’t been great at ball-tracking on deep balls either.
This all goes ties in with my earlier statement about a WR needing to step up and be a reliable target for Michigan. Ronnie Bell isn’t coming back this season, it sucks, but that’s the reality of the situation, so Michigan will need someone or multiple guys to fill the role moving forward.
I’m looking at Cornelius Johnson especially. He had been at Michigan the longest, in his third season, and out of all the guys besides Baldwin and hurt Ronnie Bell, he’s the most experienced. I understand he’s tall and lanky and not super fast, but he should be more of a Nico Collins-type of receiver by now. I’m still waiting for those consistent performances.
The Northwestern game should be the perfect game for a monster performance from one of the WRs. I’m still waiting for an 8-12-catch, 150-200 yard performance from one of the receivers. If there was ever a time to do it, NW would be the game.
