Michigan basketball picked up the commitment of four-star wing Jett Howard on Wednesday and here are three thoughts on what it means for the Wolverines.

It didn’t come as a shock or a surprise when four-star forward Jett Howard committed to Michigan basketball on Wednesday. But that doesn’t make it any less important for the Wolverines.

In terms of the 2022 recruiting class, Howard has been the top target for head coach Juwan Howard and not just because he’s the head coach’s son.

Howard is ranked in the top 50 by ESPN, 247 sports, Rivals, and On3.com. His game has grown over the years and it wouldn’t be a surprise if he wound up as a five-star. He’s not far off.

While his recruitment was a little quiet, precisely because he was always viewed as a heavy Michigan lean, that doesn’t mean he’s not elite.

In terms of shooting and scoring ability, few in the 2022 class are better than Jett and his game continues to expand in terms of creating for others too.

We took a brief look at what Michigan is getting in Howard, but here’s a deeper look at what this means for the Wolverines now and in the future.

Jett is the cornerstone in 2022

Michigan basketball made a strong push for Tarris Reed and he’s another top-50 prospect, but Jett’s been the guy on top of the board and it’s always big when you’re able to get that guy.

Obviously, Juwan was likely always going to get Jett, just like he was to get Jace to Ann Arbor, but he’s landed top-50 caliber recruits in every class, and Franz Wagner would have been in that same range.

Juwan can attract NBA talent to Michigan and Jett will add to that group that’s going to include guys like Wagner, Isaiah Livers, Hunter Dickinson, Caleb Houstan, DeVante Jones, and Moussa Diabate.
