Michigan football has extended some new 2022 offers this past week, plus the latest info on a number of top targets visiting, as well as one who won’t.

As we move into the fall, Michigan football still has a lot of work to do on its 2022 recruiting class. Right now, the Wolverines sit at 15 commitments, and as long as those all stick, they would need to add 10 signees or so to fill out the class.

More than overall numbers, Michigan football has some needs to address and the two most important right now are on the defensive line and in the secondary at safety.

The Wolverines added just one safety in the 2021 recruiting class and while there were some solid numbers in the previous classes, especially 2020, it’s a concern that no one is committed at the position and the top target, Dillon Tatum, is trending to Michigan State.

Michigan has recently made an offer to a safety in 2022 — Damani Dent — who is expected to visit Ann Arbor on Sept. 11 for the Washington game. Oregon is after him along with U-M and he’s expected to decide in October.

But another safety who is likely higher on Michigan football’s board and who is also visiting on Sept. 11 is current Notre Dame commitment, Amorion Walker.

Walker is committed to the Irish as a wideout but the prospect from Louisiana, who is 6-foot-4,  175 pounds and listed as the No. 540 recruit overall in 2022, is being recruited by U-M as a DB.

The three-star recruit visited Michigan football over the summer for the Big House BBQ and tells Sam Webb of The Michigan Insider that he plans to return this fall.

Walker’s visit could be key, but another 2022 recruit — Mason Graham — is also going to take a visit to Michigan. The defensive lineman was offered over the weekend and is currently committed to Boise State but after five sacks in two games this season, he’s moving up on the radar.

All of those visits are good news for Michigan football. However, another visitor set for Sept. 11 vs Washington won’t be in attendance and that’s Joshua Josephs.

The edge rusher is a top target for Michigan and they are really high on his ability. He was supposed to visit on Sept. 11 before his Oct. 1 commitment. However, he’s now visiting Tennessee according to EJ Holland of Rivals, which isn’t good news for Michigan.

Lastly, the Wolverines extended an offer to three-star cornerback Rodney Johnson out of Alabama in the 2022 class. Johnson reported the offer on Twitter but then took down the tweet later.

Johnson is 5-foot-11, 180 pounds, and is ranked outside the top 1,000 of the 247 sports composite rankings yet he’s moving up fast. Alabama is showing interest and he has offers from a slew of schools in the SEC and ACC.

If Johnson can’t play safety, I don’t know how much sense it makes but Texas also offered this month and his recruitment is starting to blow up, so at least the ability is there.
