Michigan Football: Wolverines target Boise State commitment in 2022
Michigan football is targeting a new defensive tackle in the 2022 recruiting class and one that is currently committed to Boise State.
It’s been a month and a half since the Michigan football program has landed a verbal commitment in its 2022 recruiting class and it’s clear that all momentum has stalled.
There are some promising developments, especially one that came to light over the weekend as EJ Holland of Rivals reported that five-star cornerback Domani Jackson will be visiting Michigan during the fall and is expected during the Washington game on Sept. 11.
While that’s obviously good news, the Wolverines still have a lot of work to do in order to flip him. Speaking of flips, Michigan is now aiming for another as the Wolverines offered Mason Graham, a defensive lineman in the 2022 recruiting class committed to Boise State.
What the Michigan offer could mean
Graham is listed as 6-foot-4, 280 pounds on his 247 sports profile, but his offer list is short when it comes to the power 5 as Oregon State is the only major conference offer.
Boise State is obviously a top program in the Mountain West. Colorado, Arizona, and Wisconsin have also shown interest in the prospect out of California. Yet, those programs didn’t offer.
Graham took a visit to Oregon State over the summer and then pledged to the Broncos in the early part of July. According to the 247 sports composite rankings, he’s ranked No. 991 overall, as well as the 133rd best defensive lineman.
But in the 247 sports (own) rankings, he ranks much higher. He’s rated by the service as an 87 compared to his composite rating of 85. Among defensive linemen, he’s ranked 84th which is about 50 spots higher.
Out of California, the obvious connection is to Courtney Morgan who has helped Michigan football recruit some other prospects in the state this cycle.
With the class short on commitments and missing out on targets at some positions, such as safety where the Wolverines are going to miss out on Dillon Tatum, they are having to expand the board and dig a little deeper.
You don’t usually see Michigan recruiting against Boise State and Oregon State. That doesn’t mean anything negative against Graham, who looked pretty impressive in this highlight at least.
Graham would also fit as a five-technique unless he really grew into this body. Either way, The Wolverines are relying on their evaluations this cycle and expanding their board with late-rising prospects and some diamonds in the rough.
Graham could be one of those and if he decides to visit Ann Arbor, then Michigan could be serious at flipping him from Boise State.
